‘We want to continue the legacy’: Ribfest’s new era underway in Riverside Park

The Kamloops Sports Council (KSC) has taken the reins.

“We’ve always viewed this as a staple Kamloops event,” KSC executive director Duncan Olthuis said. “We couldn’t let it die. Rotary’s done such a great job with it. We want to continue the legacy.”

Among the hurdles facing the new regime in Year 1 is poor air quality from wildfires burning across the province.

“It’s an individual’s choice to come or not,” Olthuis said. “We’d love to see everyone support us. It’s not a for-profit event.”

Some rib lovers wore masks before removing them to chow down. Alexander Hatter was among the eventgoers not bothered by the smoke.

“The air quality is actually not so bad,” Hatter said. “It’s higher up. You’ve got all the good, fresh smells. It kind of compensates for the smoke. We always come here every year. We enjoy the ribs.”

Olthuis said the non-profit KSC will donate Ribfest proceeds to local sports organizations.

“The Kamloops Rugby Club, KMHA [Kamloops Minor Hockey Association], Kamloops Curling Club and a few other clubs helping us out today will get donations, as well as Kidsport Kamloops,” Olthuis said.

Five ribbers – Boss Hog’s of London, Ont., Gator of Ontario, Grizzly of Victoria, Prairie Smoke and Spice of Saskatchewan and Grillbilly Willy’s of B.C. – are competing for awards, including best ribs, best sauce and people’s choice.

The event – which has raised more than $850,000 for community initiatives since inception – includes a 50-50 raffle, beer garden, live music and family fun zone.

Metallica tribute band Master of Justice is scheduled to play its Music in the Park set on Friday, with showtime slated for 7 p.m.

Ribfest will run from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The event will coincide with another downtown staple, the Hot Nite in the City car show, on Saturday.

“Come on out,” Olthuis said. “Enjoy some ribs, great entertainment and cold drinks.”
