Bowers Lake wildfire held at 150 hectares; Evacuation Order eased to Alert

100 MILE HOUSE — After 10 days, residents who were evacuated by the Bowers Lake wildfire can return home, with some precaution, as the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is getting a hold over the flames.

However, the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is still urging caution as the Evacuation Order was downgraded to an Alert on Monday (July 27) evening.

The Order was initially put in place on July 17 for 38 properties, about 48 kilometres east of 100 Mile House.

“Wildfires remain active and firefighting activities continue in the area. It is important for residents to stay out of active wildfire areas. Interfering in an active fire area will result in crews ceasing ground and air operations potentially endangering nearby properties,” said the CRD.

“Please watch for livestock and wildlife on roads, as fences may have been damaged.”

This comes as the BCWS has classified the 150-hectate blaze as ‘Being Held,’ meaning they do not anticipate any growth beyond their containment lines.

“Crews and heavy equipment have completed a guard around the entire fire perimeter and are establishing hose lay along the completed guard,” said the BCWS.

“Helicopters will continue to drop water and assist in operational objectives where necessary.”

While the BCWS is gaining the upper hand over this lightning-caused wildfire, officials warn there could be more fire starts in the near future.

“A risk of lightning with some precipitation is forecasted for the norther regions of the fire centre,” said the BCWS.

“July 28, the risk of lightning increases throughout the fire centre with some precipitation expected for the northern region. Southerly winds are expected to shift to west/northwesterly in the evening.”
