United Way BC supporting wildfire evacuees with province-wide appeal for donations

“It’s so those dollars can go out to individuals through those community partners via things like gift cards or help them purchase things they need,” Rintoul told CFJC Today. “In addition, we can provide larger grants to charities who are also helping folks when they return home.”

“Our recovery funding is there to support people through the recovery stages which can take weeks to months after an evacuation. By ensuring that the United Way has dollars through this appeal allows us to be more nimble with those responses and support community members wherever they may land.”

Rintoul said the United Way has already been supporting people displaced by wildfires in the Clinton and Boston Bar areas, as well as in the Kootenays. She noted donations can be made online and people from across the province are being urged to help out where they can.

“Our communities are so generous and folks just want to help but the challenge is by going to a reception centre, you can cause more chaos,” Rintoul said. “We [also] want to make sure donations are reaching the people who need them most and are distributed in an equitable matter.”

“We encourage folks to look at donating dollars, and then trusting the charities and those folks working directly with those impacted to get what they need.”
