Cariboo Regional District adds to evacuation orders for French Bar Creek fire

BIG BAR, B.C. — A fire that has been burning for about three weeks west of 70 Mile House is still growing – and prompting more evacuations.

On Saturday evening (July 25), the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) ordered 22 parcels evacuated in the Churn Creek area because of the expanding French Bar Creek wildfire.

An area to the north of the properties under evacuation order has been put on evacuation alert by the CRD in conjunction with the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation.

Emergency measures in response to the French Bar Creek fire straddle the boundary between the CRD and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD), where there are also evacuation orders and alerts. For details on CRD-enacted orders, visit this site. For residents within the TNRD, visit this site.

The French Bar Creek wildfire is considered part of the Big Bar Complex, along with the Fiftynine Creek wildfire and the Pear Lake wildfire, both of which are threatening the Village of Clinton and the surrounding area.

As of Saturday evening, the French Bar Creek fire is measured at 25,299.2 hectares, or 253 square kilometres. It was first discovered on July 4 and BC Wildfire Service has not settled on a suspected cause.
