Highway 3 reopens after wildfire threat but Trans-Canada remains closed near Boston Bar

HOPE, B.C. — One of two major highways connecting the B.C. Interior to the Lower Mainland has reopened with a single-lane alternating traffic, and drivers are being told to not stop in the wildfire zone.

The Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) has reopened between Manning Park and Sunshine Valley, a little over two days after it was closed by the nearly 10 square kilometre Norwegian Creek fire, which was sparked by lighting on July 17.

The Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon remains closed in the Boston Bar area due to the ongoing risk presented by the three wildfires that make up the Brunswick Complex. The highway was also closed on Tuesday by the human-caused Anderson Creek fire, south of Boston Bar.

The Coquihalla remains open, despite a 43 hectare fire burning near Dewdney Creek, south of the Great Bear Snowshed. Drivers are being told to obey all posted speed limits and traffic-control personnel as there are several construction zones on that major thoroughfare.

“Given the quickly changing nature of the situation, people travelling through the area are encouraged to continue to check DriveBC for the most up-to-date closure and reopening information,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said, in a statement.

“Drivers are advised to be prepared to adjust their driving routes, and obey all signage and traffic-control personnel in the area. Please allow for additional travel time through the area when diversions are underway.”

Highway 99 through Lillooet and Whistler is also open as a fire that broke out near Pemberton is currently being held.
