Jays point to complete-game effort against Rays as required blueprint for success

A month ago, the Red Sox sat in last place in the AL East, but their surprising win streak has propelled them up the standings, and they currently have sole possession of the third wild-card spot.

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, have struggled coming out of the all-star break. They’ve lost five of their last seven games and fallen to six games back of the final AL wild-card berth.

That makes the series at Fenway Park pivotal if Toronto wants to gain ground in the standings.

“They’re about as hot as you can get, and we’ve got to be ready for that, especially that atmosphere, that environment,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said after Thursday’s win.

“It’s a tough place to play, but we seem to play pretty well there. You’ve got to come out ready. You’ve got to come out aggressive. You have to continue to push the envelope. But it’s a big series. There’s no skating around that for sure, especially with the way they’re playing.”

Starting pitcher Shane Bieber (2-1) was sharp on Thursday, holding Tampa Bay to one run on three hits over seven innings with three strikeouts. It’s the second straight start the right-hander has held the opposition to one run or less.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s offence capitalized on opportunities. Ernie Clement scored on Alejandro Kirk’s infield single in the first before Springer’s RBI single in the third inning scored Yohenrick Piñango to retake a 2-1 lead. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in Myles Straw in the seventh for an insurance run.

“Today, I think we played our brand of baseball, and I think that’s all we can do and continue to try to do,” said Bieber. “Last year, we caught a lot of breaks that we’re not catching right now, and maybe other teams are catching against us, and that’s the game.

“I think you’ve got to ride those waves and figure out a way to come out on top, which we did today. And so that’s what we’ve got to focus on and move on to tomorrow.”

The Blue Jays are 5-1 against the Red Sox this season. Given the importance of the upcoming series, the Blue Jays have lined up their rotation so Trey Yesavage (4-5), Dylan Cease (6-5) and Kevin Gausman (4-9) will start in Boston.

“This is big boy time, and we’ve got to be ready to roll,” Schneider said. “(It) starts with Trey, starts with our offence, defence, everything, but I think it’s a really good opportunity for those three guys to step up.”
