UPDATE: Grassfire along Coquihalla near Kamloops under control; highway lane closed for vehicle recovery
KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 5:00 p.m.): A wildfire that was sparked by a motorhome that went up in flames on the Coquihalla Highway south of Kamloops is now under control, but one southbound lane remains closed to traffic at this time.
Kamloops RCMP, the BC Wildfire Service and other first responders all rushed to the scene near the Lac Le Jeune Road/Inks Lake Road turnoff just before 2:00 p.m. Thursday (July 23). The were called as the vehicle fire spread into the nearby grass, and was burning up the hillside.
Drive BC says the southbound right lane is closed between Inks lake Road and Chuwhels Mountain Road as vehicle recovery is underway. It says to expect delays and watch for nearby crews and signage, and that an update is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.
Kamloops RCMP are also urging drivers to slow down and to follow direction from emergency personnel on scene.
