Province and First Nations near Sun Peaks sign renewed Reconciliation Framework, MOU

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — A renewed Reconciliation Framework and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in Sun Peaks between the province and neighbouring First Nations.

Taking part in the signing on Monday (July 20) was representatives from Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, Sun Peaks Resort, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw, B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, B.C.’s Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and Sun Peaks Resort.

In a news release, the resort municipality says the MOU between the province and the First Nations is meant to guide discussions on land and natural resource stewardship in the Sun Peaks area while identifying new revenue sharing streams to support the First Nations’ socio-economic goals.

Additionally, the Adams Lake, Neskonlith and Skwlāx Bands, along with the province, will find ways for the communities to share in the economic benefits of Sun Peaks under the MOU.

Neskonlith Kukpi7 Irvin Wai states the MOU signing isn’t about looking back with resentment but rather looking forward with purpose.

“We also recognize that the history of development on this mountain has been difficult,” Wai says. “For many years, decisions were made without the meaningful involvement of our people. That history cannot be forgotten, and it reminds us why respect, recognition, and meaningful partnership are so important today.

“As we face the challenges ahead — whether they are wildfires, floods, climate change, or other emergencies — we all have a responsibility to stand together. None of us can face these challenges alone. By respecting each other’s rights, honouring our commitments, and supporting one another, we can build resilient communities that will benefit future generations.”

The resort municipality adds that the Secwépemc flag was officially raised at Sun Peaks on Monday. It says the flag will fly permanently in Sun Peaks, acknowledging Secwépemc culture, heritage, and the deep Indigenous history of Sun Peaks’ land.
