KAMLOOPS — Work to get the iconic 114-year-old 2141 steam locomotive back on the tracks of Kamloops is chugging along.

The Kamloops Heritage Railway Society (KHR) took to social media Friday (July 17) to announce the completion of hydrostatic test under the supervision of Technical Safety BC. KHR said the test is an important milestone in its quest to get the locomotive dubbed the Spirit of Kamloops operational.

“This successful test follows an extensive engineering assessment, NDE examinations and countless hours put in by our dedicated volunteers,” the KHR statement said, noting representatives from both the Boiler Safety and Railway Safety divisions were in attendance.

“With the hydrostatic test now complete, 2141 has been cleared to proceed to steam testing.”

Built in 1912 — the same year the Titanic sank — the 2141 steam locomotive was retired from active duty in 1958. It was set to be scrapped before it was acquired by the City of Kamloops in 1961.

For nearly three decades, it was displayed at Riverside Park as a giant playground piece and symbol of the city’s connection to the railway.

A lengthy restoration process began in the 1990s, and the locomotive was used for rail tours at Halloween as well as for Christmas. The COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent lack of available track time derailed those plans and 2141 went into storage.

Last June, the Spirit of Kamloops emerged from its slumber for the first time in almost six years, but there is still plenty more to be done before the Kamloops Heritage Railway Society’s plan to create one of world’s longest steam-powered train excursion towards Vernon can leave the station.

“There’s still work ahead before 2141 is back pulling trains, but today was a significant step forward, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going,” KHR added it in its post.

“Stay tuned for more updates as we move into the next phase.”
