Kamloops Classic swimmers in fine form in home pool at provincial championships

KAMLOOPS — Ten Kamloops Classic Swimming athletes are competing at the Swim BC Summer Provincial Championships this week at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

“It’s nice that it’s in our home pool because we practise here every day and we know what it’s like,” Classic swimmer Tenley Post said. “We know how to race in this pool. I want to get a lot of best times. I’m hoping for new provincial qualifying times for some of my races for the older age group and I want to medal.”

More than 500 swimmers are in town for the meet, which is among the marquee events on the Swim BC calendar.

“It’s for many of these swimmers the top of their iceberg, as far as they will make it in their career, so it’s a really exciting energy,” Swim BC executive director Elmar Heger said. “[There are] lots of athletes who have trained all year for this event.”

Three Classics – Post, Maci Dixon and Mia Wittal – recorded personal-best times in their respective 200-metre individual medley heats while CFJC was at the pool on Friday [July 17] morning.

The event is scheduled to run through Sunday [July 19], with preliminary heats in the morning and finals beginning at about 5 p.m. each day.

Spectators are encouraged to take in the action.

“It’s very scary, but really fun to hear them cheer me on and know they’re excited to watch me race,” Dixon said when asked about swimming in front of large crowds.

Added Heger: “It’s a great energy. You see a lot of fantastic swimmers. Some of them will likely be in the Olympics in 2032. You get a chance to see them really early in their career.”

Perhaps Wittal – who recently broke one of Summer McIntosh’s records – will one day don the Maple Leaf at the Games.

Wittal, 13, won bronze in the 13- and 14-year-old girls’ 100m backstroke on Thursday.

“It’s been fantastic,” Classics’ head coach Shane Downey said. “This is Day 2 of the competition. The kids are definitely holding their own. They’re ready to compete, swimming fast in prelims, moving up and getting second swims in finals.”

Molly Brookes, Ryder Crichton, Haolin Li, Brooklyn McCabe, Nash McCaleb, Quinn Meredith and Elise Percy are also among the 10 representing the Kamloops club this week at provincials.

“Ten is good, but there is always room for improvement,” Downey said. “I’m very proud of how our swimmers have represented the club, how they’ve progressed, what they’ve been able to achieve. We’re looking forward to next season and pushing our boundaries even more.”
