Overnight wildfire in Battle Bluffs area being held at 5.7 ha.

UPDATE (2:20 p.m.) Kamloops RCMP said investigators suspect the fire was intentionally set and are looking for a potential suspect.

Police found a burned vehicle along with a licence plate at the scene, with early evidence pointing to a deliberate fire.

The investigation is ongoing and police are looking for the owner of the license plate to determine if it is associated to the burned vehicle and the fire.

UPDATE (12:00 p.m.): The BC Wildfire Service is investigating the grassfire in the Battle Bluffs area west of Kamloops.

Video posted to social media shows a burned out vehicle at the Battle Bluff fire site.

Speaking to CFJC Today, Fire Information Officer Taylor Wallace says investigators are determining the specific cause of the fire.

“There are a lot of subsections under what a human caused wildfire could be, so we have our investigators out to determine the specific cause within that broad, human caused category,” Wallace says.

Wallace adds that nine personnel remain at the site of the fire.

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service made quick work of a notable grassfire in the Battle Bluffs area west of Kamloops. 

The wildfire service’s website shows the Battle Bluff fire was discovered early Thursday (July 16) morning. In an update at around 5:30 a.m., the wildfire service says the fire was under control at 5.7 hectares. 

The Battle Bluff fire is suspected to be human caused. 

As of Thursday morning, the wildfire service’s website lists 31 active wildfires across the province. Of them, 10 are in the Kamloops Fire Centre. 

The fire danger rating in the Kamloops Fire Centre is mostly high or extreme.
