Warner Bros. is re imagining the beloved 1993 family film Free Willy, with Anthony and Joe Russo’s production company (best known for the Avengers films) attached to produce. Screenwriters Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett, known for Miller’s Girl, have been hired to write the screenplay. The original film, about an orphaned boy who befriends a captive orca, grossed $153.7 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. Michael Jackson’s theme song “Will You Be There” reached the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 and went platinum. Lauren Shuler Donner, a producer on the original franchise, returns as executive producer.
