100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — The District of 100 Mile House says it wants to formally explore forming a regional municipality with neighbouring electoral areas.

However, the community is not receiving any support from the Cariboo Regional District.

On Wednesday (July 8), 100 Mile House Mayor Maureen Pinkney issued a news release stating a regional municipality would be governed by a mayor and five councillors – as well as CRD Electoral Areas G, H and L.

“When our South Cariboo Communities can be viewed as a larger Municipality we have a larger collective base and increased ability to attract investment and therefore the ability for diversifying and creating larger economics,” Pinkney said, noting the model could result in better governance, increased efficiency and reduced costs.

“While the process of restructuring local government is complex and can take considerable time, the District of 100 Mile House council remains committed to advocating for governance improvements that enhance the delivery of services to South Cariboo residents,” the district added in the release.

The Cariboo Regional District responded with a news release of its own later in the day, saying it has not endorsed the idea and is not participating in forming a proposal.

“Earlier this year, the CRD advised the province that, while it remains committed to working collaboratively with the District of 100 Mile House on matters that benefit the region, it cannot support the governance proposal as presented because it does not identify notable benefits for our residents,” stated the unsigned CRD release.
