Taylor Swift Wins Dismissal Of “Absurd” Copyright Lawsuit Over Song Lyrics

A federal judge has dismissed a copyright lawsuit against Taylor Swift filed by self-published Florida poet Kimberly Marasco. Judge Aileen Cannon ruled Monday that similarities between Marasco’s poems and Swift’s songs involved only generic words, “basic ideas,” and “common observations” — material copyright law does not protect. Marasco had claimed Swift stole lyrics across more than a dozen songs spanning five albums. The judge refused to allow Marasco to refile, noting she had already seen previous lawsuits dismissed and been “expressly warned” it was her final chance. Swift’s attorney Douglas Baldridge had previously called the claims “absurd and legally baseless.” The ruling effectively ends more than two years of litigation across two separate cases. A rep for Swift declined to comment.
