KAMLOOPS — Tenley Post is primed to compete in five events against provincewide competition.

Elijah Mukuru is amped to test his mettle in the 200-metre freestyle against some of the best in B.C.

Misty Hayes is pumped for team travel and the opening ceremony.

They are among seven Kamloops Classic Swimming athletes who have qualified to compete for Thompson-Okanagan at the B.C. Summer Games, which are slated to get underway on July 22 in Kelowna.

“That is a pretty significant turnout for Kamloops Classic compared to other clubs,” said Berke Ikican, an assistant coach for the Classics. “Why I think it’s a big turnout is the way the kids are committed to the sport, the way they’ve been working hard, the way they’ve been taking my feedback and the way they’re training. It’s been great.”

Stephanie Sears, Blake Steele, Nash McCaleb and Aurora Armstrong will also represent the Classics at the Games, a multi-sport event that takes place every second year and features some of the top amateur athletes in the province.

Thompson-Okanagan zone athletes will compete against Kootenays, Fraser Valley, Fraser River, Vancouver-Coastal, Vancouver Island-Central Coast, North West and Cariboo-North East.

Games athletes typically range in age from 13 to 18, with an average age of 14.

Tenley Post is 12 and dreaming of a place on the podium.

“That would be amazing,” she said. “It’s really a dream to be in this competition and a big step, so if I get to the podium, I’d just be thrilled.”
