Andrews preaches social issues, bettering the community for workers in council bid announcement

KAMLOOPS — Brian Andrews is the 17th Kamloops resident to put their name forward for a spot on city council.

Andrews is a labour organizer and believes that experience will be paramount for success around the horseshoe in city chambers.

“I don’t want to start pushing union ideologies when it comes to city hall. That’s not going to go over very well,” said Andrews. “But being a union representative has taught me how to negotiate, it’s taught me how to run and participate in council meetings. When it comes to negotiating, I’m constantly talking to people who don’t see eye-to-eye with me, but we still have to come to an understanding. I think that’s exactly what city hall needs.”

His main priorities focus around social services and ensuring they become more stable, taking into account the need and the community impact. Other key planks include economic development and working to better the community for workers.

“Mainly, I’m running to be a voice for the working people of Kamloops,” Andrews told CFJC News. “I’m not a business owner – like many Kamloops people, I’m not a business owner – and I feel people who don’t own businesses don’t have a strong enough voice. And I want to be that voice for the people who work for those businesses and find it hard to live here [with] unaffordability, whatever reasons. I want to be that voice in city hall for them.”

Election day is Saturday, October 17, when Kamloops will elect eight councillors and one mayor.
