100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Interior Health has announced a pair of upcoming emergency room closures in the community of 100 Mile House this weekend and into next week.

The ER in at 100 Mile District General Hospital will be closed for 21 hours starting 11:00 p.m. Saturday (July 4) to 8:00 p.m. Sunday (July 5). It will also be closed for 13 hours on Monday (July 6) between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

People in the 100 Mile House area in need of emergency care during what the 22nd or the 23rd ER closure of the year as being told to head to Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake, which is an hour’s drive away.

This closure comes as the emergency room at Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater is also set to close for 13 hours this evening (July 3). Interior Health told CFJC Today that both these closures are related to the ongoing job action by the BC Nurses Union.

“The summer months can be particularly challenging as vacations and staffing pressures increase,” Interior Health told CFJC Today. “We do everything we can to cover staffing gaps when they occur, often right up to the last minute. These are gaps in the schedule and not a result of current job action.”

“Interior Health recognizes that these changes may have a significant impact on the community and that transparent notification is important. If coverage is secured and an interruption is avoided, we will provide an update to the community.”

As has been the case for previous emergency room closures, Interior Health says people should call 911 if they need emergency care, or HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 if they aren’t sure if they need to head to the emergency room.
