Paul Edward Martin

Posted Jun 30, 2026 | 11:40 AM

October 27, 1953 – June 19, 2026

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we share that Paul has left us to start a new journey. A proud husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and a friend to so many.

Paul Edward Martin was born on October 27, 1953, in Kamloops, B.C. to proud parents, Victor and Elda Martin. Paul would become the older brother to Vicci, Brendan and Kevin, and the Martin family on Battle Street was set. They would later move up to the Fraser Street home.

Paul passed peacefully on June 19, 2026, with his loving wife Helen and friends at his side. He was 72 years old. His illness came on very quickly, and Paul could fight no more. He was filled with love in his last few months by Helen and family, Bryan (son), Vicci (sister), Roxanne (stepdaughter) and her family and many friends from his home and community in Medicine Hat. Paul shared many visits with friends and we are all thankful for video chats.

Paul will be remembered and cherished by his loving wife and best friend Helen Webster, son Bryan Martin, siblings: Victoria Nelson and Brendan Martin and sister- in- law Jayne, stepdaughters: Kandie Nimco and Roxanne Davis (Roy), Marilyn Martin and stepson Raymond Thibeault. Grandchildren: Anthony Locke (Kaitlyn), Katherine Locke, Hayley Davis, and Mason Davis. Sister in-laws: Irene Giesbrecht (Don), Zoe Ann Johnston (Glen passed) and brother in-law Lorne McGrath (passed). A loving uncle to: Jeremy (Katie) Nelson, Chris (Courtney) Nelson, Stacey Nelson, Mike Nelson (Sara Rinaldo), Ashley Martin (Jon Holm), Kim (Mike) Weber, Andrew Martin. Paul cherished his many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and was grateful to have spent precious time with them shortly after the passing of his brother Kevin just a few months earlier.

Paul was predeceased by his loving Mom and Dad, Vic and Elda Martin in 2010, brother Kevin, as mentioned above, his loving Nona and Nono – Marina and Santo Comazzetto, Nana and Grandad – Charlotte and Ted Martin and many, many aunts and uncles. Special passings to mention are brother-in-law Marty Nelson, nephew-in-law Craig Kinney, cousins Larry and Greg Maralia, Kenny Didrich, Ken McCrindle and Phillip Molitor and Steve Smith.

Paul was a fighter from a very young age as he battled sickness. He worked as a paper boy for his first job, and as the older brother then taught the trade to his younger brothers. He also served as an altar boy at Sacred Heart Cathedral for many years. He went on in the 70’s to be the equipment manager for the Kam High Red Devils and would push through his health difficulties while playing high school rugby. Mom was less than thrilled when Paul would come home with cuts and bruises. Paul was a talented musician in many ways. He played both the guitar and piano and had an impressive guitar collection. Blessed with a remarkable ear for music, he could hear a song on the radio and then sit down at the piano and play it by ear. As part of his youth, Paul and sister Vicci were a key part of the church youth folk group playing at the Sunday night mass. Vicci would sing and Paul would rock the guitar. We called it the Sunday night weekly concert.

Paul started his career as a cook/chef for Canadian Forces Base at Mt. LOLO outside of Kamloops and cooked there until 1988 when it shut down. He then transferred to the Chilliwack base, where his son Bryan was born and raised. The family had a tour in Nova Scotia and eventually settled in Medicine Hat in the early 2000’s. It was at this point, Paul and Helen met and started a life together.

Paul sprung into the Medicine Hat community upon his retirement. This included valuable work with the Schizophrenia Society in leading the recreation program and proudly being a lecturer for the Society. Helen and Paul were excited to be members of the Elks Club. Paul had a true passion for both crib and Scrabble. In his youth, I can picture Paul and Mom playing both of these games for hours. This love led Paul to join the Veiner Centre Crib, Scrabble and Bingo clubs in Medicine Hat. In his younger years, Paul also enjoyed and spent hours playing golf and was an avid pool player. A joy that Helen and Paul shared. He was a long-time Medicine Hat Tigers’ hockey fan and loved going to the games with Bryan.

Paul treasured family occasions, especially helping to prepare Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. His ‘world’ famous stuffing was a highlight of any meal. Paul truly enjoyed a good steak dinner and especially loved cooking meals for Helen at home. Paul led a very busy and rewarding life. Paul will be incredibly missed by our family and his community. No more than by the Knights of Columbus. Paul had just earned his 50-year pin with the Knights – Incredible Paul! Faith was a calling for Paul, as he loved all the activities tied to the Knights and the Church. He never missed helping out at the pancake breakfasts.

Thank you to Father Paolo Cervantes and all the priests who gave Paul so much comfort during his recent health battle and for all the support over his years in Medicine Hat. Many thanks also to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, the Medicine Hat Hospital and St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat for the great care that was given to Paul.

Family and friends are invited to join in a prayer service and celebration of life for Paul on the following dates: Prayer Service Monday, July 13 at 6:00 p.m., Pattison Funeral Home 540 South Railway St. SE. Medicine Hat Celebration Mass Tuesday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. Saint Patrick’s Church 238 2 Ave. NE. Medicine Hat Internment will take place at a later date at the Mountain Vista Mausoleum Hillside Cemetery, Kamloops, B.C.

In lieu of flowers, in memory of Paul, please consider donations to the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta at http://www.schizophrenia.ab.ca and check dedicate my donation. I’m sure Paul had a game of crib and a steak dinner in heaven on Father’s Day with Mom, Dad and recently passed brother Kev.

As Paul would say… Hope you have a great day!… Go Tigers!

Paul, you will be greatly missed forever.
