The Latest from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada

After 120 minutes of intense play, and one goal apiece, Morocco and the Netherlands are heading to penalty kicks to decide who gets to play Canada in the Round of 16, and who goes home from the World Cup.

11:19 p.m.

First 15 minutes of extra time are completed in Mexico and the score remains tied at 1-1.

11:11 p.m.

Soufiane Rahimi of Morocco is robbed by the Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from in close halfway through the first 15 minutes of extra time. Morocco is outshooting the Netherlands 12-7, and 6-3 on target.

11 p.m.

Morocco and the Netherlands, tied 1-1, after 90 minutes, will play 30 minutes of extra time. If they remain tied after that, they’ll go to penalty kicks.

10:54 p.m.

Issa Diop scores one minute into second-half stoppage time for Morocco to tie the match at 1-1.

10:45 p.m.

The Netherlands lead 1-0 with seven minutes left in the second half as Morocco tries to push for the equalizer.

Two sparkling saves by the Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen keeps the match scoreless after 23 minutes as teams head for their first hydration break.

And the final knockout match of the day — Morocco versus the Netherlands — is now underway in Mexico.

The Netherlands and Morocco are about 35 minutes away from kicking off their Round of 32 match at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico. The winner will advance to play Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday in Houston. The Netherlands won Group F with a record of two wins and a draw, while Morocco finished second in Group C with two wins and a draw. Canada, Brazil and Paraguay have advanced to the Round of 16. South Africa, Japan and Germany are one-and-done in the knockout stage.

7:28 p.m.

Jose Canale scores the winner as Paraguay upsets Germany 4-3 in penalties to advance to the Round of 16. It’s the first time since 2010 that Paraguay has advanced to the Final 16. Paraguay will play the winner of Tuesday’s match between France and Sweden.

7:11 p.m.

Germany had a go-ahead goal by Jonathan Tah waved off in the first half of extra time. After 30 minutes of extra time the teams are going to penalty kicks to decide the winner.

6:38 p.m.

Paraguay and Germany are playing in extra time in their Round of 32 game at Boston Stadium. Kai Harvetz brought Germany level with a goal in the 54th minute. Paraguay led at the half on a goal from Julio Enciso.

6:33 p.m.

Canada’s 1-0 win over South Africa drew an average audience of 5.2 million viewers, Bell Media said in a release. The telecommunications company said 11.8 million unique Canadian viewers tuned into Sunday’s match at some point across TSN, RDS, CTV, Nuovo, and Crave. Viewership peaked at 8.2 million viewers when midfielder Stephen Eustaquio scored the winning goal in added time.

5:15 p.m.

Paraguay has Germany on the ropes in Round of 32 action at the World Cup. Julio Enciso scored in the 42nd minute to give Paraguay a 1-0 lead at halftime. The winner of the game at Boston Stadium will face either France or Sweden in the Round of 16.

4:35 p.m.

Stephen Eustaquio’s hometown of Leamington, Ont., is celebrating after his winning goal in Sunday’s 1-0 win over South Africa sent Canada to the World Cup round of 16. The town changed its illuminated roadside signs overnight to congratulate the 29-year-old midfielder. Mayor Hilda MacDonald called Eustaquio a “local hero” and said Leamington will consider naming a soccer field after him. Eustaquio moved to Portugal at age seven but has maintained close ties to the community through family and friends.

Germany and Paraguay are playing for a spot in the Round of 16 at Boston Stadium. Four-time champion Germany (three times as West Germany) is back in the knockout round after failing to advance out of the group stage at the last two tournaments. Paraguay is appearing at the World Cup for the first time since making it to the quarterfinals in 2010.

Brazil narrowly avoided an upset in the World Cup Round of 32. Gabriel Martinelli scored six minutes into added time as the five-time champions beat Japan 2-1 in Houston. Kaishu Sano had put Japan 1-0 in the first half before Casemiro scored at the 56th minute to draw Brazil level. Brazil will face either Norway or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16 on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

Japan is one half away from the first knockout-stage stunner at the 2026 World Cup. Kaishu Sano scored in the 29th minute to give Japan a 1-0 lead over five-time champion Brazil at halftime. The winner of the game in Houston will go on to face either Norway or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16.

Round of 32 action is underway in Houston, with Brazil taking on Japan. Five-time champion Brazil advanced to the knockout stage by winning Group C with seven points. Japan finished second in Group F with five points.

Canada will learn its next FIFA World Cup opponent tonight when the Netherlands takes on Morocco in the round of 32. Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time winner lifted Canada to a historic 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday, sending the men’s team to the round of 16 for the first time. The Canadians will face the winner in Houston on Saturday, with a place in the World Cup quarterfinals on the line. Kickoff between the Netherlands and Morocco is scheduled for 9 p.m. in Monterrey, Mexico.
