Seven to 10 days of cool, cloudy and wet conditions expected for Kamloops area

KAMLOOPS — Following a warmer and drier spring season, the Kamloops area is in store for an uncharacteristic stretch of temperatures near or below normal.

According to Environment Canada, an upper-level low pressure system from the north Pacific is moving into the southern Interior Friday (June 26). It’s expected to provide showers and cooler temperatures in the Kamloops region for seven to 10 days.

Meteorologist Matt Loney calls the brief, cooler and humid shift a welcome change for the valley bottoms as the Kamloops area has been running precipitation deficits for most of the spring.

“This is playing catchup with precipitation for the last few months where it has been quite dry. “What is unwelcome is it’s already dry and there is the potential at times for some dry lightning, if the instability is still there, but maybe not associated directly with the rainfall at the time,” Loney told CFJC Today

Environment Canada’s seasonal outlook predicts a higher probability of a warmer-than-normal summer along with a slight tendency toward below-normal precipitation for the southern Interior.

Loney says it’s likely the Kamloops area snaps back into that trend during the second week of July.

“The seasonal forecast that comes out gives an indication of how the 90-day period of summer may unfold,” Loney says. “It doesn’t really show how that heat gets partitioned, whether it comes in spells where there’s a lot higher temperature than normal, which can still happen later on in the summer.”

As of publication, Environment Canada predicts a good chance of thundershowers for Kamloops Friday afternoon. From there, stretches of showers and temperatures in the low 20s are expected from Saturday night through to Tuesday (June 30).

Noting while that the forecast can still change closer to July 1, Loney encourages residents in the Kamloops area to have alternate plans in place for Canada Day festivities if they’re planning to spend the day outdoors.
