KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops and Tkemlúps te Secwépemc are partnering on a new grant application under the FCM (Federation of Canadian Municipalities) local leadership for climate adaptation initiative.

The funding would be used for a climate risk assessment, hazard mapping, adaptation planning, facilitation and any related consulting expertise.

“Recent events such as the 2021 atmospheric river and evacuation support from that highlight the growing risks in our area. These trends reinforce the need for coordinated long term adaption planning, rather than just responding when an incident happens,” said Ty Helgason, Kamloops’ emergency preparedness manager.

Kamloops city council approved the grant application of $105,000. The project totals $150,000 with the remainder set to be split evenly between the city and band.

“This work will address both local and our shared regional risk,” Helgason told city council. “The project scope and some of the outcomes, it would be to establish an ongoing governance framework for climate resilience and emergency preparation collaboration between ourselves and Tkemlúps.”

“It would also result in us completing an emergency disaster management act, aligned climate hazard risk and vulnerability assessment as well as a climate adaption strategy.”
