SRD K9s of BC to close Kamloops training centre

KAMLOOPS — The Search, Rescue and Detection K9s (SRD K9s) of BC will be moving out of its K9 training centre along Kamloops’ Windsor Avenue, but the organization will stay in operation.

The volunteer organization, which trains dogs to aid in the search for missing people, said it made the decision to refocus their efforts.

“After careful consideration, our team believes we can best serve the families of missing loved ones by dedicating all of our energy and resources to training and searching for those who have not yet made it home, rather than managing a large facility,” SRD K9s of BC said in a statement.

“While our space will be under new management, we feel this is the right move for our organization and the people we serve.”

The organization will continue to train rescue dogs and be an active part of the community.

“A special thank you goes out to the many school groups and students who visited the centre on field trips. We have always enjoyed sharing our work with young people, and while we no longer have the centre, we will still gladly introduce you to our dogs – we’ll just come to your school instead,” added the statement from SRD K9s of BC.

Work on the 9,600 square foot facility began in 2019, and SRD K9s of BC has been in the space since July 2022. A grand opening was held three years ago in June 2023.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped make our stay at the centre possible. In particular we are deeply grateful for the generous gift provided by the Cooper Family and the Cooper Family Foundation, which allowed us to establish and operate the facility,” said SRD K9s of BC.

“Although our location is changing, our focus remains the same. The SRD K9s of BC will continue helping those who need us, supporting families and working tirelessly to being missing loved ones home.”
