KAMLOOPS — Lienke Raath and Lacey Boileau of the Kamloops Track and Field Club set records at the B.C. School Sports Track and Field Championships earlier this month in Langley.

They are among five local students who reached the podium at the event.

“It was great,” said Raath, who attends Kamloops Christian School. “It’s really good progress for me, just knowing I’m getting closer to other records I want to break.”

Raath posted a time of 7:00.96 in the 2,000-metre steeplechase, a B.C. high school record in the senior girls’ division.

Boileau of Chase Secondary had an outstanding meet in the junior girls’ division, winning gold in two events – 80m hurdles (11.29 seconds) and pole vault (3.59m) – and silver in long jump (5.33m).

Her time in the 80m hurdles is a provincial record.

“I was so surprised,” Boileau said. “I didn’t even hit a hurdle. I locked in. I just ran.”

Amy Woods of Westysde Secondary has a divine approach to pole vaulting.

“I usually start off with a prayer and focus on everything I have to do,” Woods said. “I ask God to give me the strength and confidence to be able to perform.”

She placed first in senior girls’ pole vault at provincials, clearing 3.15m.

“I wouldn’t say [I was] surprised, but I was really happy with it because I knew what my competition was going to be going into it,” Woods said. “So, I guess, yeah, I am a little bit surprised about it.”

Payton Heer of South Kamloops Secondary earned silver in senior girls’ high jump with a leap of 1.70m.

Frankie Johnston of Valleyview Secondary claimed bronze in junior girls’ 1,500m steeplechase with a time of 5:22.74.

The KTFC athletes have turned focus to the B.C. Athletics Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are slated to run from July 3 to July 5 in Coquitlam.
