Police identify suspect, looking for person of interest in two suspicious fires in Williams Lake

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Williams Lake RCMP are investigating a pair of suspicious fires in the city over the last week. 

At around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday (June 13), RCMP say officers responded to the 900-block of Mackenze Avenue South where a Ford E350 van was found with significant fire damage. According to police, the Williams Lake Fire Department responded to the vehicle fire, and crews believe it’s suspicious in nature. 

RCMP are looking for a person of interest who was seen in the area around the time the van fire started. They’re described as a clean-shaven Indigenous man in his 30s wearing dark track pants, a blue scarf or bandana over his face, black shoes and a black-coloured backpack, ballcap and T-shirt. 

The person of interest was also seen riding a black, red and silver hardtail mountain bike. 

Three days later, at around 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday (June 16), RCMP discovered the outside of a business on the 200-block of Oliver Street was on fire. Williams Lake Fire Department did put out the flames. 

A suspect has been identified, and charges are pending per the investigation and approval by the B.C. Prosecution Service. 

“Currently, there is no information to suggest that these two fires are linked,” RCMP state in a news release issued Tuesday. “However, investigators are looking at all options and evidence and have not ruled out any possibilities.
