Incumbent Kamloops councillor Karpuk announces re-election bid

KAMLOOPS — Incumbent Stephen Karpuk will seek a second term, as the city councillor announced his re-election bid on Friday (June 12) morning from the site of the Red Bridge.

Karpuk spoke to the work done by council during the term despite the distraction and noise at city hall, pointing to work on the Build Kamloops plan, upgrades to Riverside Park, along with asset management and curbside organics.

“Yeah, we’ve had dysfunction. Our council is not dysfunctional – that is an inappropriate paint brush, but it’s an easy one to have,” said Karpuk. “I think for people who dig down and look at what we’ve accomplished, look at the synergies we have, reflect on what we do as a council and how we are actually together – and most times in our council and in events we are together. The issue comes out in the personalities and you have to remember, at the end of the day, it’s not about us as a council – it’s about us as a community and hopefully that will resonate.”

If re-elected Karpuk, noted he wants to focus on the Red Bridge replacement, along with revitalization around Kamloops Airport and work around a community forest.

While he understands the public is looking for answers on street disorder and crime, the challenge comes with that being a provincial responsibility.

“Working with our higher levels of government, our local representatives, to see change made in how when someone does something there is a consequence. That consequence could be an educational consequence, it might be incarceration – and I’d be honest, I’m in total favour of the involuntary care. I think our experiment socially has changed,” said Karpuk.

Karpuk is the sixth member of the current horseshoe to announce his intentions, joining Dale Bass, Nancy Bepple and Bill Sarai for council, and Reid Hamer-Jackson and Mike O’Reilly for mayor.

The civic election will be held on Saturday, October 17.
