KAMLOOPS — Drivers in the Kamloops region were on better behaviour in May 2026.

According to BC Highway Patrol, 1,881 speeding tickets were issued in the Central B.C. region in May 2026. The area includes, Clearwater, Kamloops, Kelowna and Merritt. It’s down more than 2,200 speeding tickets issued in the area from the same month in 2025.

For excessive speeding, the Kamloops region is on par with last year. BC Highway Patrol says 93 excessive speeding tickets with impoundment were issued in May 2026 compared to 94 during the same month last year.

During the detachment’s May campaign, BC Highway Patrol noted an officer impounding three motorcycles during a single stop on Highway 97 east of Falkland where the three riders were travelling together at excessive speeds.

“A lower overall number of tickets is good, but it’s not an indication that we are actually driving more safely,” Insp. Chad Badry states in a news release issued Thursday (June 11). “BC Highway Patrol officers wrote significantly more excessive speeding tickets in May 2026. Those tickets indicate a dangerous lack of judgment from many drivers.”

Across the province, 7,898 speeding tickets were issued in May, along with 568 excessive speeding tickets with impoundment.

While total speeding tickets are down from the more than 9,600 issued in May 2025, excessive speeding tickets are up from 403 issued during the same month.
