TNRD, Chase launch household organics pilot project

CHASE, B.C. — A few households within the village of Chase will spend the next year testing out the possibilities of an organics composting program.

The program is being launched by Chase and Area Family Services (CAFS) with funding from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD).

It will see select households use provided buckets to collect organics, then drop them off at a receptacle located in Willson Park during designated drop-off times.

The program will be reassessed in 2027, once one year elapses.

In a news release, TNRD Waste Reduction Coordinator Tatiana Mueller said a 2024 study found 44 per cent of all landfilled material was food or yard waste that could have been composted, leading to significantly less material for TNRD landfills.

“Food waste also creates methane gas in a landfill, compared to being composted where it creates healthy soil that also stores greenhouse gases,” noted Mueller in a news release.

The TNRD’s Regional Solid Waste Management Plan contains a goal of reducing the district’s annual disposal rate to 500 kilograms of waste per person by 2028.
