KAMLOOPS — Rental costs in Kamloops rose in the last month, despite the provincial average decreasing in the same time.

That’s according to the latest report from Rentals.ca, which reported a rise in costs for both one and two-bedroom units.

The average cost to rent a one-bedroom apartment in Kamloops increased from $1,837 per month to $1,879, marking a 2.4 per cent month-to-month increase.

Meanwhile two-bedroom units saw a more modest 0.5 per cent jump in in price to $2,113 per month, up from $2,103.

The two types of units saw a year-over-year chance of a 3.9 per cent increase in one-bedroom apartments and a 1.3 per cent decrease for two-bedroom units.

Rentals.ca said the average cost of all rentals in Kamloops sits at $2,009 per month.

According to Rentals.ca data, the numbers place Kamloops as the 32nd-most expensive city to fund a rental unit in Canada.

Provincially, the average cost of a rental unit dropped by 5.7 per cent to $2,355 per month.

Christine Boyle, minister of housing and municipal affairs, said B.C.’s rental prices have been on a downward trend in the last year.

“This month, we saw our affordability streak continue as prices remain headed in the right direction for renters. B.C. had six cities among the 15 largest asking rent decreases over the prior year in the country: Burnaby (-10.5 per cent), Abbotsford (-10 per cent), Richmond (-9.7 per cent), New Westminster (-9.7 per cent), Coquitlam (-9.0 per cent) and North Vancouver (-8.8 per cent),” said Boyle.

Rentals.ca said North Vancouver remains the most expensive city to find rentals in the country, with an average monthly rental cost of $2,927.

According to Rentals.ca, four of Canada’s top 10 most expensive cities to find rentals are in B.C.’s lower mainland (North Vancouver, Vancouver, Coquitlam and Burnaby), while the other six are in Ontario.
