Loewen announces Kamloops council bid, calls for recovery-focused approach to address street disorder

KAMLOOPS — A new name has entered the race for Kamloops city council. Former Canada Post employee Troy Loewen announced his campaign today, with support from Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

“I want to work with people, solve Kamloops issues and make it a stronger, healthier, safer community,” said Loewen Wednesday (June 3).

Loewen made the announcement outside a vacant building at Seymour Street and Sixth Avenue – a recently closed 7-Eleven store – saying the location was chosen to highlight concerns around street disorder, crime and homelessness.

Loewen says his campaign will focus on recovery-oriented supports, mental health services and greater accountability at city hall.

“I believe we should be doing more for recovery-oriented housing in Kamloops. I also believe we should have a more transparent and accountable (council) for taxpayers’ dollars and where the money is being spent.”

Loewen worked at the downtown Canada Post location for more than two decades and says those years gave him a front-row view of the challenges facing businesses and residents in the city core. Hamer-Jackson says he supports Loewen’s goals for the city.

“There’s tons of vandalism. You know, there’s lots of hazardous waste cleanups. A lot of times there’s loitering, trespassing,” said Loewen. “People are afraid for their safety, and we need to build a strong, healthier, safer community.”
