Kamloops students to speak out against AI infiltration this Friday

KAMLOOPS — A group of young Kamloopsians will be gathering at Summit Drive and McGill Road this Friday (June 5) afternoon to speak out against the infiltration of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI data centres into the city.

They’ll be protesting the construction of the new AI data centre on the campus of Thompson Rivers University. While these students say concerns include the environmental impacts posed by data centres in general, they’re also speaking out against generative AI in particular, saying it hampers critical thinking among students.

“Generative AI has grown so much and there are so many new ones that have come in and there are more students who have been using generative AI, especially from my experience,” co-organizer Kaitlyn Monteiro told CFJC Today.

“I grew up in India and moved here later and I’ve seen more people – especially teachers – move into using paper and not online [resources], so kids don’t use AI.”

“This came about because we are some students who are very interested in the effects AI can have on people and their cognitive function,” fellow co-organizer Echo Hill added. “It’s at that location because we are protesting against TRU’s data centre, specifically.”

Friday’s event will get underway around 12:15 p.m., and it’s expected to last for a couple of hours. It’s being billed as an upbeat event and organizers are hoping for a good crowd of supporters who are also opposed to generative AI to turn up.

“Ten years ago, this was a very new concept and most AI wasn’t generative AI – it was speech to text or auto-pilots on planes,” Hill added. “Now that we have gotten into more generative AI and we’ve got more research, it has come out that it is not beneficial and so people are speaking out about this more.”
