LANGLEY — A man initially accused in a 2025 homicide in Kamloops has now been arrested and charged in a shooting death in the Lower Mainland.

Justin Hopkins-Jones, 37, was arrested last October and charged in the September 27, 2025 beating death of 39-year-old Jason Pinette near the Merit Place shelter on Notre Dame Drive in Kamloops.

Six months later, the BC Prosecution Service decided to stay the second-degree murder charge against Hopkins-Jones, saying it was “due to a material change in circumstances that meant the charge assessment standard was no longer met.”

Last Tuesday, Langley RCMP were called to a complaint of shots fired in the 5400-block of Brydon Crescent in that city. The 47-year-old male victim died at the scene.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the case and four days later arrested Hopkins-Jones for the crime.

He has once again been charged with second-degree murder and is due back in court on Friday (June 5).

“Despite the complexity of investigation, IHIT investigators were able to quickly identify and locate the accused,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT in a news release issued Tuesday (June 2). “This was made possible by the witnesses who came forward with information and the strong collaboration between IHIT and its policing partners across the Lower Mainland.”

Fong notes Hopkins-Jones and the victim knew each other and police believe the killing was an isolated incident.
