KAMLOOPS — Police in the Lower Mainland say the suspect in a January shooting death in Surrey was arrested last week in Kamloops.

The case dates back to January 13, when police responded to a man lying near the street in the 3500-block of 176th Street in Surrey. The man was suffering from gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the victim as 46-year-old local resident Baljinder ‘Binder’ Singh Garcha.

Less than an hour before Garcha was found, police were called to a vehicle fire on 40th Avenue in Surrey, which investigators later linked to the shooting death.

As the investigation played out over the past several months, police linked the killing to 32-year-old Lower Mainland resident Brian Kiraly-Miller.

Last Thursday, investigators located and arrested Kiraly-Miller in Kamloops. He has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and is due back in court on Friday (June 5).

“First-degree murder is the most serious offence and the laying of this charge reflects our ongoing commitment to these complex homicide investigations,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in a news release issued Tuesday.

“This case has had a huge impact on Mr. Garcha’s family, friends and the broader community. While details about the motive and circumstances cannot be shared due to the ongoing court proceedings, investigators can confirm this was a targeted shooting.”
