Kamloops records 7th-warmest month of May; yo-yoing temperatures continuing into June

KAMLOOPS — Inconsistent stretches lead to the seventh-warmest month of May on record for Kamloops.

According to Environment Canada, the mean temperature for Kamloops clocked in at 17.1 C in May 2026, up from the normal of 15 C.

For precipitation, it was closer to a normal month of May in Kamloops for 2026. Environment Canada says 27.6 millimetres of precipitation was recorded at Kamloops Airport, just below the typical 28 mm. It includes 17 mm received on May 13

Despite the late precipitation, Environment Canada scientist Christy Climenhaga says the month of May concluded a drier and warmer spring season for the Kamloops area.

“When we’re looking at our temperatures and those runs of hot, dry stretches, you’re usually looking at our upper atmosphere to see if we have any upper ridges,” Climenhaga told CFJC Today. “Those big boulders in the jet stream that allow warmer-than-normal conditions to move in and keep all the rain away; drier-than-normal conditions in those runs, as well.”

June is expected to continue to provide those forecast roller-coaster temperature conditions as Climenhaga touted. Kamloops is expected to experience warmer-than-normal conditions until an upper trough brings showery and cooler conditions by the weekend.

However, the seasonal forecast for precipitation is proving to be trickier for Environment Canada to pin down with accuracy.

“Looking for that June, July and August period, we do have some slight signals of drier-than-normal conditions into the Southern Interior, so we’ll have to see if that holds out,” Climenhaga says. “Precipitation can be really atypical – not only with where it’s going to fall, but how much; with thunderstorms.”

Climenhaga notes the weather agency has higher confidence in a warmer-than-normal summer for the Kamloops region.
