KAMLOOPS — The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch alert for the North Thompson area as water levels continue to rise.

A high streamflow advisory was issued for the North and South Thompson Rivers on Thursday, but the even higher water levels have led to worsening flood conditions in the North Thompson area.

“River levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur,” said the BC River Forecast Centre.

The flood watch includes tributaries around Blue River, Clearwater and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, the high streamflow advisory is still in effect for the South Thompson, including Malakwa, Sicamous and the surrounding areas.

The forecaster predicts rainfall to persist throughout the region until Tuesday.

“Warmer weather over the past several days has led to increased snowmelt rates and rising river levels through the region. An upper low is advancing across the US northwest, and is expected to bring severe weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall, into Alberta and the eastern edge of British Columbia,” said the BC River Forecast Centre.

The River Forecast Centre said rivers have also been rising because of accelerated snowmelt in addition to the rainfall.

According to the forecaster, high flows are expected throughout the region and into the southeastern part of B.C. until at least Tuesday.
