KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops woman with more than two decades of experience in health care is throwing her name into the municipal race.

Cindy Sonne announced recently that she’ll be running for Kamloops city council, with the support and endorsement of Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

Sonne says her decision to run comes after years of community work and after following the mayor’s leadership over the last several years.

“I liked [Hamer-Jackson’s] goals. I liked when I was reading about him,” said Sonne.

“When I met him, he was very supportive. He took his time out of his day to meet with me. He didn’t have to. I noticed that he was in the community talking to the homeless,” she added.

Sonne says if elected, she wants to align with Hamer-Jackson’s goals, get some safety to the streets and push for internal reviews of current harm reduction strategies, while also advocating for more wrap-around support services for people experiencing homelessness.

“Their voices need to be heard… the homeless voices need to be heard.” Sonne told the CFJC News team on Friday (May 29).

She also pointed to infrastructure issues like the Red Bridge replacement and sidewalks in Parkcrest as key priorities.

“When I say number one is safety, it is number one. I also am thinking about outside of that, supporting the businesses, having sidewalks in Parkcrest, the Red Bridge… and so I can’t wait to see change.” says Sonne.
