High streamflow advisory issued for North and South Thompson Rivers

KAMLOOPS — A high streamflow advisory is in effect for the North and South Thompson Rivers.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre says the advisory issued at 11:30 a.m. Thursday (May 28) includes tributaries around Blue River, Clearwater, Malakwa, Sicamous and the surrounding areas.

The forecast centre says a recent stretch of warmer weather has led to increased snowmelt rates and rising river levels throughout eastern B.C.

Additionally, a low-pressure system is expected to bring severe weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall, into B.C. and Alberta. Rainfall is expected to begin Friday (May 29) and last through Monday and early Tuesday.

“There is still uncertainty in the location of the storm track with this system, and if it shifts westward from its current projected movement could bring higher rainfall amounts into B.C.,” the forecast centre notes.

Rivers along the western side of the advisory region, including the Upper Fraser – East, North Thompson, South Thompson and Boundary, are forecast to experience moderate flows, up to around two-year to five-year levels. However, the forecast centre warns that higher flows are possible if the weather system shifts further west.

Further east, a flood watch is in effect for the Upper Columbia River, including tributaries around Revelstoke.

Residents are asked to stay away from fast-flowing rivers.
