KAMLOOPS — Two people were taken to Royal Inland Hospital after a vehicle plunged into the North Thompson River Sunday (May 17) evening.

BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) told CFJC Today that it was notified at 6:17 p.m. about a vehicle that left Schubert Drive at Juniper Street and landed in the river. It dispatched an ambulance with advanced care paramedics, four ambulances with primary care paramedics and a paramedic supervisor units to the scene.

“Paramedics provided medical treatment to two patients – one an occupant of the vehicle and one a passerby helping at the scene – both of whom were transported to hospital in stable condition,” BCEHS said in its statement.

It’s not clear what caused the vehicle to go off the road, but police had Schubert Drive taped off between Evans Avenue and Birch Avenue. RCMP, CSOs and Kamloops Search and Rescue were all on scene when CFJC stopped by.

Witnesses at the scene as well as those on social media say one person remains unaccounted for. Witnesses also said one person jumped into the river to render aid after what appears to be a red sedan was seen in the water.
