KAMLOOPS — The race for one of the eight seats around the horseshoe at Kamloops City Hall is beginning to take shape as more people signal their intention to run for council.

Joe Mauro will be tossing his hat into the ring for councillor, stating his support for the Performing Arts Centre, though he also highlighted priorities around seniors and mobility.

“Our sidewalks and I talked to (business association) a few times, they are brutal, they are hard to get around with walkers and canes, wheelchairs you are constantly getting rattled,” Mauro told CFJC News. “And all they do, instead a little bit at a time replacing them. I’m a construction guy, a little bit at a time, replace it, don’t grind it, you’re grinding and grinding it, it doesn’t make it any better.”

Less than 30 per cent of eligible voters bothered to cast a ballot in the election four years ago, a statistic Mauro would like to see increased, noting the importance of attracting younger people to the polls.

“Instead of just getting upset, let’s do something so I decided six months ago I’m going to throw my hat in,” said Mauro.

“I know most of the council members. Reid (Hamer-Jackson) is a good friend of mine, but there are certain things that I don’t agree with. You have to be diplomatic, you have to make sure that the people of Kamloops, yeah they aren’t all going to be happy, but you have to give them something.”
