New

Posted May 15, 2026 | 8:31 AM

September 22, 1927 – May 6, 2026

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Steve Werstiuk in Kamloops, B.C.

Steve was born in Ispas, Two Hills, Alberta, to parents Fred and Lena Werstiuk. He was one of seven children.

Steve is survived by his siblings, Nestor (Gloria) and Olga; stepchildren Peggy, Marvin (Mary) and Jeanette (estranged from Steve); grandchildren Brandon, Kessiah, Tristan, and Tyler (Ashley); and great-granddaughter Emilia.

He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Roy (Elaine), Robert (Karen), Carrie (Dan), Glen (Kate), Craig (Alexa), Shelley (Brian), Wayne (Susan), Tony (Michelle), Simone (Sonny), Carl (Kassidy) and Sherri.

Steve was predeceased by his ex-wife, Helen; siblings John, Walter, Helen, and Victoria; nephews Carmen (Kathleen) and Larry (Geraldine); niece Debbie; granddaughter Marissa; and in-laws Tom, Mike, Peter and Joan.

Steve worked on the family farm for 20 years before moving to Vancouver, where he began his career as a hotelier with his brother Walter at the Marble Arch Hotel. In 1972, the two brothers moved to Kamloops, where brother Nestor later joined them as owners of the Village Hotel. In 1980, they expanded their business and became owners of the Plaza Hotel.

Steve enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, watching sports on TV, walking and dining out with friends. He loved traveling and spending time with family and extended family. Steve always dressed well, and he will always be remembered wearing his hat. He was a wonderful host whose guests never had an empty cup. Steve was an extraordinarily kind soul and a true gentleman with a heart of gold. Outgoing and friendly, he loved to chat. His nieces, nephews and grandchildren were blessed with the opportunity to learn firsthand from his charm, warmth and generosity.

In 1990, Steve retired and enjoyed many years in Yuma, Arizona. His travels also took him to Western Europe, Ukraine, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean and Thailand. He also drove across Canada twice in his motorhome and traveled as far as Anchorage, Alaska.

Steve’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Del Begio, the staff at AgeCare Sun Rivers and Riverbend and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Lunch to follow. Interment will take place afterward at Hillside Cemetery.

You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the Werstiuk family.
