Snowfall accumulation possible on Coquihalla and Pennask Summits May long weekend

MERRITT, B.C. — Winter tires are no longer required on mountain highway passes in B.C. until Oct. 1, although the risk of snowfall lingers throughout May long weekend.

In a special weather statement online, Environment Canada says falling freezing levels combined with upper level instability and moisture will bring the possibility of snowfall to the Coquihalla Summit on Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt and Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna.

The weather statement is in effect from Friday (May 15) morning to Sunday (May 17) morning.

Drivers are asked to adjust their speeds to road conditions and allow for extra time to travel.
