Kamloops council greenlights two downtown murals

KAMLOOPS — New murals will soon adorn the walls of two downtown Kamloops businesses following approval by council on Tuesday (May 5).

The first mural will be at Kamloops Square, on the west-facing facade along St. Paul and Seymour Streets. The colourful rendering brings a new injection of life to the beige wall close to where the Kamloops Farmers Market runs on the weekend.

“Process-wise, it will be installed this month into June,” said Dusan Magdolen, cultural services and events manager. “Mainly, it will be brush-painted with some spray-painted aspects. It will take about three weeks, primer paint and then deluxe weather-guard paint. And then an anti-graffiti clear coat will be put on by the Kamloops Square management.”

The second mural will rise downtown in the alley off Fourth Avenue, brining a sunset vision of the lost Red Bridge to life, along with a raven.

“I hope there is more of this. I hope this ignites more creative thinking of more artists and more businesspeople willing to take this on. Especially when we can get that lacquer put on it so it doesn’t get tagged, and if it does, it has a finish we can clean up,” said Councillor Bill Sarai. “I think this is something that is really exciting for Kamloops.”
