Kamloops to launch downtown planning initiative

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is inviting residents, business owners and other community partners to take part in a public engagement initiative aimed at shaping the future of the city’s downtown area.

The plan, dubbed Reimagine Downtown!, will bring together sever other municipal planning documents and explore how streets and public spaces in the downtown core can better support people and businesses while aligning with initiatives and projects in the area.

The City said this step builds on the Downtown Plan, introduced in 2019, which included updated policies and guidance for development, public spaces, mobility and economic vitality.

The Downtown Plan also identified several major Big Moves – catalyst projects and key redevelopment sites intended to shape the future of the downtown core,” said the city.

“Since then, other municipal initiatives, including the Recreation Master Plan (2019), You are Here Kamloops Cultural Strategic Plan (2024), KAMPLAN: City of Kamloops Official Community Plan (2025), and the Active Transportation Plan Update (2025), have continued to influence how downtown Kamloops evolves.”

Residents can participate in the Reimagine Downtown! engagement initiative in person at the Delta Hotel, Rivers Room East on Monday, May 4 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the Kamloops Farmer’s Market from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

An online survey will also be available from May 4 to 24 here.

“The feedback received will be used to support the development of a downtown revitalization plan to guide streetscape upgrades and public open space for our downtown,” said the city.

“The final plan will be presented to council after a second round of community engagement scheduled for Spring 2027.”
