SD73 DPAC calling on trustees to fight for funding ahead of budget discussions

KAMLOOPS — Monday evening (April 20), SD73 will hold a virtual budget presentation, where families can get an overview of the 2026-27 budget priorities ahead of their preliminary approval at next week’s meeting.

The district parent advisory council (DPAC) is getting out ahead of the meeting, putting down into writing its hopes for the new budget year, calling on trustees to advocate to the province for more dollars – or better placed dollars – to help improve outcomes for all students.

“We also left $5 million in restricted funds in the bank at the end of last year,” highlighted DPAC Chair Bonnie McBride. “Funding that was meant from both the federal and provincial government to support particular populations of students or particular programs like food security. We don’t spend that money we hold on to it. There is more at play and there are more ways to do this work than what we are seeing here in our district, is what we are concerned about.”

“A trustee is not a pencil pusher. They really need to use that power and stand back up to the province and say we need that money in a different way. If we can’t get more we need it to work for us in a better way,” added McBride.

The DPAC saw the budget during an information session last month, with McBride saying she hopes the entire document has been reconsidered in the weeks since.

“Priority one is always make sure that we are delivering a budget that impacts students the right way in a positive way rather than in a negative way,” added McBride. “It isn’t something new for DPAC. We asked for the board to start to centre students in their presentation last year, and we are just reiterating that is what we want to see.”

The school district’s budget is currently set to be adopted during the meeting held on May 11.
