Kamloopsian Logan Stankoven reaches 20-goal mark for first-time in NHL career

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops hockey product Logan Stankoven has hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his NHL career.

The 23-year-old Stankoven reached that milestone with two goals and an assist last Thursday (April 9) as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 7-2.

“It’s awesome,” Stankoven is quoted as saying in an article on NHL.com. “It’s what you dream of as a kid. A lot of work, for sure. I know it’s far from over. I’m going to keep getting better every game.”

The former Kamloops Blazers captain put the Hurricanes up 2-1 at 17:10 of the first period. Stankoven took a neutral zone face-off, then moved into the offensive zone and fought off Chicago defenseman Sam Rinzel, before a wrist shot past Spencer Knight.

“I don’t do that too often,” Stankoven said of his 20th NHL goal this season. “Yeah, I just saw off the draw a good chance to jump and kind of steal that puck. I tried to take it to the net and get it up, and luckily enough, I was able to beat the goalie.”

His second goal of the night, scored at 4:08 of the second period, stood as the game winner. Stankoven backhanded the rebound of a shot by Taylor Hall from the slot to put the Hurricanes up 3-1.

Stankoven has 21 goals and 42 points in 79 games this season, his first full season in Carolina after he was traded by the Dallas Stars in March last year. He is one of seven 20 goals scorers this season – the first time that has happened in Hurricanes history.

Stankoven has 41 goals and 94 points in 181 NHL regular season games with Carolina and Dallas over the past three seasons. His eight-year, US $48-million contract extension – the richest NHL deal signed by a born-and-bred Kamloopsian – is set to kick in next season.

The Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes have two games left to play before playoffs. They’re in Philadelphia to face the Flyers at 4:00 p.m. this evening before closing out the season against the New York Islanders tomorrow.

Stankoven was scratched from the lineup on Saturday (April 11) when Carolina played the Utah Mammoth. While no reason was provided, reports suggest he was given a day to rest ahead of the playoffs, which are scheduled to begin on Saturday.
