KAMLOOPS — A Shuswap woman who now calls Kamloops home has been awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, one of Canada’s highest honours for volunteer service.

“Carla Krens is being recognized for her outstanding volunteer service and the positive impact she has made through her dedication and leadership within the community,” said Kamloops–Shuswap–Central Rockies MP Mel Arnold.

“Her commitment to supporting others and strengthening local initiatives reflects the spirit of volunteerism that helps organizations and communities across the region thrive and grow.”

Krens spent 30 years volunteering in the Shuswap before moving to Kamloops. She was unable to receive the medal from the Governor General in Ottawa, so a special ceremony was held Friday (April 10) afternoon.

“It’s beyond my wildest dreams, I have a bit of imposter syndrome going right now, like really just me?,” said Krens. “But when I look back volunteering, the pleasure was really on my side, to create, to get people interested in theatre and singing, and playing ukuleles. that is the greatest pleasure to get the feedback.”

As more and more organizations, clubs, and non-profits look for the younger generation to offer their time as volunteers, Krens said finding something you’re passionate about is a great first step towards giving back to your community.

“Maybe it will lead to a life long passion to whatever you are seeking,” added Krens. “It doesn’t matter what it’s in, but to me volunteering is the first step you can take as a young person in a field that you are interested in.”

“Don’t look for pay, whether it’s a food bank, a theatre, work behind the scenes in a theatre, it doesn’t matter but it gets you going and the rewards are awesome.”
