TRUMP'S THREAT

Kamloops’ Iranian population watches as clock ticks down on latest Trump threat

KAMLOOPS — A man prone to exaggeration, President Donald Trump says on Truth Social that ‘a whole civilization will die to tonight, never to be brought back again.’ His supporters call it his usual negotiation tactic, while opponents see it as a public admission of future war crimes and genocide.

“That is why he is being labelled as TACO, or ‘Trump Always Chickens Out.’ He gives this extreme threat and deadline and then he backs off. But at the same time, he does make irrational foreign policy decisions which are hard to predict,” said TRU assistant professor of political science Saira Bano Tuesday (April 7).

Tuesday was deemed ‘Bridge and Power Plant Day’ by the president, and that threat has become real, with the Israeli government announcing it has hit bridge infrastructure around Iran already.

“If Trump follows through on this threat and he attacks civilian infrastructure and power infrastructure, then Iran is going to retaliate and attack Gulf countries’ energy infrastructure. We are going to have production problems,” said Bano. “It means it will take years to recover from this problem and it is going to have far worse consequences for global markets.”

The threat of future bombing and attack may certainly draw more countries into the fray if acted upon, either directly or through proxy.

If Trump sticks to infrastructure, at least one Iranian, who once had his arm broken during a protest in Iran, is on board if it helps lead to regime change.

“People in Iran are under pressure, have been under pressure for the past 47 years,” said Ali, who moved from Iran to Kamloops back in 2024. “They have been killed, they have been executed, they have been murdered, they have been raped – they have been under a lot of pressure. These days, we are also accepting the consequences of this threat he has [posted].”

Bano stated while the U.S. may be seeing military victories in Iran, they are losing the strategic battle, thanks to Iran’s blockage of the Strait of Hormuz – essentially a tourniquet on the global energy supply.

“Iran is looking for regional diplomacy, where Iran wants to get this regional electors in war to have security from the United States and Israel not to be attacked again. If Iran gets that, then Iran is likely to stop this war,” added Bano.

All this while calls remain for regime change and the end of an oppressive government reign of 47 years. Ali says an end without change will only lead to massacre as the regime will come down on citizens in a show of force.

“You simply need to wipe it out. There should be a regime change. If not there is going to be another massacre on a larger scale,” said Ali.

UPDATE (4:00 p.m.): Trump has now posted on social media that a two-week ceasefire agreement has been reached. Iran has not confirmed any agreement.
