Multiple controlled burns plans for Kamloops area recreation sites

KAMLOOPS — Residents in the Kamloops area may see smoke coming from several recreation sites over the coming weeks, but the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said this is likely no cause for alarm.

This comes at the BCWS works with Recreation Sites and Trails BC to conduct multiple fuel management projects across the Kamloops region.

“The purpose of this project is to help reduce wildfire hazards by removing woody debris left over from the removal of danger trees at these sites,” said the BCWS.

“Each site may have between one to four Category 2 piles that will be safely burnt by BC Wildfire Service staff prior to the wildfire season.”

The target areas include the following:

  • East Barriere Lake
  • North Barriere Lake
  • Saskum Lake
  • Johnson Lake
  • Badger Lake
  • Community Lake Southwest
  • Heffley Lake
  • Scuttio Lake
  • Pass Lake
  • Lodgepole Lake
  • Red Lake
  • Deer Lake
  • Goose Lake
  • Latremouille Lake
  • Campbell Lake

The BCWS said the exact timing will vary, depending on fuel management work at each site and local weather conditions, but burning could begin as early as Monday, March 30.

“Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days,” said the BCWS.

Smoke may be visible from Barriere, Little Fort, Logan Lake, Whitecroft, surrounding areas and along Highway 5, 5A, 1 and 97.
