Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Stephen Colbert and his son Peter McGee are developing a new “Lord of the Rings” movie titled “Shadows of the Past.” The Late Show host, a devoted Tolkien fan, will adapt chapters from “The Fellowship of the Ring” that weren’t included in Peter Jackson’s 2001 film. The story follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin retracing their original journey fourteen years after Frodo’s departure, while Sam’s daughter Elanor uncovers secrets about the War of the Ring. Colbert has collaborated with Jackson and screenwriter Philippa Boyens over two years to develop the script. This marks Colbert’s first major film development project, though he previously appeared in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” Story URL
