Thompson-Nicola Regional District opens FireSmart rebates

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is giving up to $1,000 to property owners who take steps to reduce fire risks near their home.

The TNRD says FireSmart using principals by clearing combustible materials such as dry plants, branches or leaves away from any structures can protect your property from wildfires.

“By taking action and creating a FireSmart property, you will dramatically increase the resistance of your home and property to damage caused by wildfire,” the TNRD said.

Applications for the TNRD’s FireSmart homeowner rebate program open next Wednesday (April 1), giving eligible recipients up to 50 per cent, to a maximum of $1,000, for mitigation work within 30 metres of their home.

Rebates can cover actual costs incurred for the mitigation work and/or the cost of labour.

The TNRD program only covers rural properties within the Regional District’s electoral areas. Those within municipalities (such as Kamloops), First Nations or neighbouring regional districts can go to their respective local government’s website.

Applications are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and you can find out how to apply on the Regional District’s website.
