Highway 1 closed from Revelstoke to Golden as ‘further avalanche control’ needed

REVELSTOKE, B.C. — UPDATE(10:40 a.m.): Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass with up to 70 mm to pour onto region by Friday evening (March 20).

The warning is also in place for the West Columbia, Yoho Park – Kootenay Park, Kootenay Lake (north of Balfour) and Arrow Lakes – Slocan Lake areas.

“An atmospheric river has been affecting southern B.C. this week and will persist through Friday delivering 40 to 70 mm of rain by Friday evening. This is on top of what has already fallen earlier this week,” said Environment Canada officials.

“Rain is expected to subside on Friday evening when the atmospheric river gives way and a cold front passes.”

Freezing levels will also rise in most areas, which forecasters predict to add more snowmelt and increase the impact of this week’s rainfall.

Environment Canada is urging drivers to travel safely.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Some travel delays are possible. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions,” said Environment Canada.

“Allow extra time for travel. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

EARLIER: REVELSTOKE, B.C. — After temporarily reopening Wednesday (March 18) afternoon, the Trans-Canada Highway from Revelstoke to Golden will be closed for most of the day.

DriveBC says the stretch of Highway 1 is closed from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday (March 19) as crews carry out avalanche control work.

In a post to social media, Parks Canada says significant precipitation is expected through Saturday, with the heaviest falling Thursday. It says further highway avalanche control is needed due to increasing hazards.

Forecasters noted the storm that brought a dump of snow to the Interior late Sunday has had a significant impact on snowpack conditions.
